Each Reef module is designed with enhanced settlement surfaces, including:

• High rugosity to create texture and complexity; increasing recruitment
• Grooves and underhangs that provide shelter and attachment points
• Vertical relief to encourage water flow and upwelling

These design elements mimic natural reef systems and create ideal conditions for coral larvae settlement. By improving water circulation and reducing sediment build-up, the modules enhance coral survival and accelerate reef formation. 

By accelerating reef-building, the modules increase food resources, including beneficial algae, molluscs, crustaceans, and worms. Combined with upwelling, these features support the marine food chain, including reef fish populations.

Juvenile fish are particularly vulnerable to predation, so the Reef Modules are designed with purpose-built nursery features to improve their survival. These include:

• Nursery refuge chamber, accessible only through narrow openings, that mimic natural reef crevices. These tight spaces protect fish from predators during early development stages.

For larger, demersal fish, the modules offer:

• Shaded cave-ledge habitats located at the base of each unit. These mimic natural underwater caves and remain free from direct light, offering ideal shelter for demersal species that prefer low-light environments.

By incorporating multi-layered habitat complexity, the modules support a diverse range of fish species.

Built to Last in Marine Environments with a Certified, Durable Design

Habitat Reef Modules are constructed from calcium bicarbonate-enriched concrete – a biologically friendly material that promotes coral colonisation. Each module

• Stands 1.3 metres tall
• Weighs under 2 tonnes
• Is certified for a 50-year lifespan in marine environments

Designed for stability in storm conditions, the modules are easy to deploy using standard barge-mounted cranes. A top-mounted super duplex stainless steel hook allows them to double as fish-friendly moorings or be connected to sub-surface habitats or surface Fish Aggregating Devices (FADs) for vertical habitat integration – from seabed to surface.
